General Information about Moringa

This PDF is 40

pages and will give you a great overview

of Moringa and its wonderful attributes.

Growing Moringa

Cuttings the tops of trees off to a height of 3 to 4.5 ft encourages branching at lower stem positions producing a living hedge if seedlings are thickly planted.

Harvest very young whole plants, young leaves and even older leaflets and flowers for food.

Green seeds of older pods may be shelled from the pods and cooked like green peas. (Harvest ripe pods for mature seeds)

The young roots of 1/2 meter seedlings can be harvested to a source of condiment resembling horseradish.

Repeatedly prune older flowering branches to stimulate production of new branch shoots as additional sources of leaf harvest materials.

Moringa is resistant to most pests and diseases though root rot can occur if soil is too wet.

In the dry or powdered state the leaves contain:

27% protein

38% carbohydrate

19% Fiber

Dry leaves can be ground into a fine powder and used as a food additive for nutrient.

Moringa can be used as animal forage, green manure, to make biogas, a domestic cleaning agent and a growth hormone that can increase some crop yields up to 30%.

Ounce for ounce the fresh leaves of Moringa have more beta carotene than carrots, more protein than peas, more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk, more potassium than bananas, and more iron than spinach.

The Moringa seed oil consists of 42% oil which is used as a lubricant for fine machinery and for cooking. The seed cake from pressing the oil is useful as fertilizer and as a floculating agent. It removes alkaloids and is a palatable animal feed stock.

Once leaves are harvested they should be stripped off the stems Stems and leaves can also be used as animal feed or in compost.
